SANTO DA SERRA COURSE - DESCRIPTION
With the settlement in Madeira of British families over the
centuries it is natural that they should introduce to the
Island one of their favourite sports. In 1937 Clube de Golfe
Santo da Serra was born when the Miles brothers designed a
9 hole course which encouraged the locals to eventually
construct in 1991 the present 18 hole course at Santo da
Serra and designed by Trent Jones.
There are three 9 hole circuits; the Machico which is 3.014 mts;
the Desertas which is 3.078 mts; the Serras which is 2.911 mts.
Due to the high location at its 500 metres the views for the
players are panoramic. It is has a very demanding layout and the
4th of a par-3 is over 200 metres in length and played over a
deep ravine. The player is also subject to a variable wind that
can play havoc with the final total on the scorecard.
In 1993 the first Madeira Open was included in the European PGA
Tour and was won by Mark James with 4 under par. This course
continues to host this Open PGA competition.
